Tartan is the generic term for a range of distinctively colored and arranged patterns that were first woven in Scotland. A tartan pattern consists of straight lines, crossing at right angles to give a chequered appearance. The individual geometry and specific color combinations that distinguished each Scottish clan were probably set well before 1600. The naming and registration of official clan tartans began on April 8, 1815. The term “plaid” originally referred to the upper part of the Highlander's outfit that was draped across the torso and over the left shoulder. In modern times, the term plaid has become synonymous with tartan. From its historic origins, the tartan has spread worldwide and has become a favorite design choice for many contemporary fashion designers.
